That summary at the end puts it perfectly. I enjoyed the book but it was very derivative of Rear Window and The Girl on the Train and meh.

I read the book and thought it was enjoyable, but reminded me of other work. Then I read that New Yorker article and went from liking it to not wanting to support the author's work in any capacity. The man is a sociopath, and he also copied a great deal of the movie (ironically called) "Copycat" with Sigourney Weaver and Harry Connick Jr.
