I've said this a lot on here but working with high risk, emotionally disturbed students really makes me wish certain people were not parents. Don't get me wrong I love my kids but their parents have failed them so much and it just makes me so sad for them
I don't really know how to adjudicate who can be a parent but at the very least, we do not have the kinds of social services available and parenting classes are not normalized enough. even people that grew up in "good" environments may have learned behaviors that we now understand to be safety risks for kids or whatever. It should be way more normalized for everyone to do far more training and self-evaluation, especially for people like those you mentioned (had a similar experience as a former middle school teacher in a low-income environment), but just across the board. It's like a punishment in custody disputes or child services issues versus a preventative which is so dumb.
