I never even watched season 3, oops. I remember there was major behind the scenes drama about..funding? And the head writer is too involved with fandom.

Yeah, IDW Entertainment (the entertainment arm of the publishing house of the source material comic) had been funding a portion of the show's production & could no longer afford to, so this season is premiering an entire year late.
