The movie has totally different characters and takes place in New Zealand. The show takes place in the same universe and features a cameo in one ep of the movie characters but otherwise follows new characters.

omg i'm so happy. i'm so in love with this show. I try to promote it to everyone I know because I feel like not enough people know about it and it's so much fun. I was very worried about renewal. Best comedy on tv right now.

remember that time kayvan novak did blackface during an awards show? I was so young at the time I couldn't fully comprehend what I was watching but I knew it gave me a bad feeling inside. obvs now I recognise it was blackface and inexcusably racist. For context, comedy blackface was still happening on mainstream british TV in the 00s.
