I really wanted this show to be good. I was so disappointed in the ending last season.
I don't know how I feel about Dakota Fanning here. She feels out of her element? Not sure. She can still act circles around her sister though. Makes me wonder what their relationship is like, competitve ala Fontaine/de Havilland?
Dakota feels a bit miscast to me, for starters I think her character should be older (she’s 15 years younger than the guys) and for another she comes off a bit stilted in her line reading with the old style of talking. I think Luke and Daniel pull it off better. But I do think she’s a good actress and I like her character.
There are just some actors that can pop in and out of any time period and its still appears natural.
That's why I see some movies/shows and an actor sticks out like a sore thumb. They just don't fit right. I do think the language and manner of speaking is a big part of it.
I agree, that character needs to be older. She's too young for it.
I somehow thought this was one season only, happy it's not. Though, I'm still [spoiler]upset about how they treated Mary's character though. The only recurring woc and she gets no speaking lines and then they kill her off gruesomely.
[Spoiler (click to open)]she was incredible. q'orianka was so good at acting without saying anything tbh, she had incredible chemistry w/daniel... she was my favorite part of the cast and i was so fucking bummed at her death ugh. it also sucks that her death was just a plot point to spur kreizler and sara to the places they needed to go -- he's sad about her death so he steps back from the investigation, giving sara space to step forward and take control.
i'm sure they could have done the same thing by digging deeper into kreizler's pre-existing trauma wrt his dad, rather than saving it for one of his last scenes in the final episode (the payoff wasn't great with the way they did it, imo). they could have just made kreizler/sara's fight a bigger deal and gotten the characters to the same place without sacrificing the only recurring woman of color on the altar of manpain
[Spoiler (click to open)] Despite not having speaking lines, I thought she did a great job. Her death was bullshit though. I hope Cyrus’ niece is treated better this season.
Oh god, are you me??? As much as I hate to say it, they could have just hurt her and not killed her for the exact same narrative effect of manpain (UGH) and then we'd have gotten more of her and Q'orinaka Kilcher's amazing acting! She did so much with the character despite having no lines, I'd have loved to have seen her get more narrative prominence.

I love this dark/gritty time period though.
