If they were supposed to be promoting abstinence then that message flew completely over my head. Didn't they receive a lot of backlash for their obsession with teen sex? Even the "abstinent" characters still had oral sex.

The only pro-abstinence indication on the show was that sex was a bad omen. But I think that was just an ABC Family thing.

Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily say that the show was pro-abstinence. Maybe in the beginning, but eventually everyone was having sex. Even Grace had slept with like 5 people by the time the show ended.

I only know about this show from the ridiculous clips they would show on the Soup. The message is dangerous but also so goddamn hilarious.

That show was such a treasure. It's literally the whole ass reason "This is Alexis Neiers calling" took off. It sucks that the celebs/jokes wouldn't be so relevant anymore because I'd love to watch reruns.

I remember this show, it was so bad. I remember that Palin girl went on the show too and her acting was incredibly bad, a robot could emote better.

The show was complete garbage but her reasoning makes no sense. As an actress inhabiting roles that don’t necessarily reflect your worldview goes with the turf. I mean I don’t think Chucky Theron shares opinions of Aileen Wuornos.

Lol what? I think portraying a villain or real life serial killer is a little different than finding yourself on a show that is promoting backwards 1950s beliefs.

Lol finding yourself on a show? As if she just accidentally fell into it. When you sign up for a show that will stretch over multiple seasons, chances are storylines will change and they will not correspond to your beliefs. It’s ABC family show after all.

the difference is that this show was directly marketed to impressionable teenagers and shailene herself was a teenager at the time. there's inherent value in her denouncing propaganda that might otherwise convince young people to make ill-informed sexual decisions.
