I remember SMG didn't notify the cast before it was announced that she was leaving Buffy and effectively ending the show and she got dragged for it.

Obviously not the same situation since this is an ensemble show so it isn't going to end just because America is leaving, but I can understand why the cast and crew would want to know before the press does.

I think there's a line to walk these days because unlike back in the olden days, social media exists and you don't want anyone to leak news like this or inadvertently spill the beans before the show's producers want to make the information known. The more people you tell, the more likely that the info is going to get out.

In an ideal world, the timeline would be:
(1) discuss your decision with the producers and figure our details like when the character's last episode will be and when/if there will be any kind of press announcement about it beforehand
(2) have a meeting with the cast and crew to let them know
(3) press notified

SMG had been hinting for a while before her departure that she wanted to be done with Buffy/move on and work shorter hours in movies, I remember S6 interviews sounding like that so I was not surprised at all when she announced she was done.

Honestly I think she was done dirty by the press, she was the only cast member who didn't look like she worshipped at Joss's feet/openly mentioned having disagreements with him re: the direction of the show and she was basically called a diva for not being part of the clique.

Yeah, I was a HUGE Buffy stan at the time and it was clear season 6 or 7 was going to be the last. The show didn’t have much buzz anymore, SMG was clearly over it when it moved to UPN and I don’t think the ratings were great. I understand wanting the courtesy of being told face to face but it was no shock at all. I do wonder what happened behind the scenes with the cast. SMG and Aly were pretty close at one point and then it just ended.

Plus at that time many shows ended at season 7 (all the Star Treks did). It was only after that, that shows got drawn out for 10 + years like Smallville and of course Supernatural did

i think if they're all close and like hang out outside of work and stuff, i'd get them feeling hurt she didn't tell them. but if they're all just work friends, idk. a heads up would've been nice and i'm surprised they wouldn't have announced that onset before the news broke at least, but

I'm curious how much involved with Gentefied she is, I think she produced a few episodes.
