Atlanta Newspaper demands retraction on Richard Jewell’s portrayal of journalist

Dec 09, 2019 21:37

Wow, "Richard Jewell" depicts Kathy Scruggs - a real Atlanta Journal Constitution reporter - sleeping with an FBI agent to land a scoop about the '96 Olympic bombing.

But there's no evidence it happened, and Scruggs died in 2001 and cannot defend herself. https://t.co/47KhEZoBsb

t’s a basic misunderstanding of feminism as pious, sexlessness. It happens a lot to women; we’re expected to be one-dimensional if we are to be considered feminists.

Oh come on. I so hate when actresses are in sexist films and then try to talk about the stupid shit they have to do as "empowering".

Also the " female journalist has sex with sources" is such a tired exhausting trope. This is extra depressing because it's based on a real woman.

And on a final note Clint Eastwood is an abusive piece of shit and the fact that he is still working and has a lucrative career even in his old age is a damn shame.

Her full quote, that another user posted on page 3, is even worse.

She’s an idiot and I don’t feel bad at all for thinking Booksmart was just ok.

I tried 4 times to read that ajc article but the sheer amount of ads kept crashing the page on my iPad. I assume she never spoke to her family or friends.

Tony Kiss worked with Scruggs at two other papers and remained a close friend. He did not hear from Wilde or anyone else from the movie. Neither did longtime friend Susan Parke, even though she said she offered to help.

“I gave my number to the writers,” Parke said. “I’m boycotting the movie and urging others to do so. I’m disgusted and I don’t think (Wilde) contacted anyone that was close to Kathy.”

The dead can't defamed. They could argue they were defamed by association but that's a much harder process on top of having to prove a negative (In US Law you have the defamed person has to prove the claim isn't true, rather than the defamer that it is.)

But if they continue to get publicity for this they could damage the film's critical and commercial prospects. If I was the distributors, I would seriously take that into account.

I just let out a big sigh at the Olivia Wilde quote, she can be cancelled for that. It's so fucking lazy and esp in 2019 I think we're all beyond that nonsense.

I don't know how sleeping around for info is exactly feminist when they can be underlying aspect of abuse, manipulation, and even blackmail. Also it's just plain unethical and doesn't send a good message about female journalists.

I feel bad for the real-life version if that's clearly not the case. And her not being able to defend herself is really messed up.

It's good that her former job is coming out defending her and granted themselves too because it wouldn't look good on them if they knew how got her sources and allowed it.
