Oh yes, I should go look him up on Spotify. Elves don't age like this, though, OP.

I love Beck but his last two albums have been lacking something imo :( I think it's that he seems to want hits and popularity now, maybe? He was popular at times in the past, but it always seemed incidental to what he was doing tbh. I love every single album of his up until Colors, but I guess maybe this one will grow on me. I just wish he would go back to working with more interesting producers who would tell him off for certain generic melodies/structure/lyrics, lol.

That said, this song is pretty good, and I liked the performance - v creative!

Also this reminds me of when I went to see a small last-minute show he did right around the time Colors came out and he mentioned opening for U2 in a way where he clearly expected us to be excited or something. He then started talking about Bono and it got really awkward, because he seemed to have no clue that the entire audience hated U2 and Bono, and it ended up being a whole thing.

Like how do you misjudge your entire fanbase to that extent tbh

I agree. this album doesn't connect. it doesn't have heart. It's not really the lyrics, it's the bland af music. he's done this type of music before plenty of times (the information, guero, for example) but it didn't feel this generic and empty. I thought he'd be on the edge of the 90s coming back, and revisit his earliest styles in new, interesting ways for a new audience. but this album just isn't interesting. maybe it is that he wants to chart now, but I think the best way to get a hit is to have an interesting hook or something that a listener will remember or that will distinguish you. I guess that's not cool in 2019, but beck used to be the trend-setter, not a follower. I need beck to get weird again.

Yeah, that genuine weirdness/experimentation is missing entirely now imo. Even songs like Saw Lightning and Wow, which I generally like, and which people seem to hail as a return to form, feel really manufactured (maybe because of the production). I feel like Saw Lightning especially is a song that I would have loved if Guero-era Beck had recorded it, but somehow it doesn't feel authentic as is. I want less "I just wanna stay up all night with you" and more "lady, step inside my hyundai" :(
