both the inventor and fyre were emmy nominated for documentary special so neither should be allowed to compete here.

these award bodies have really gotta make up their minds on eligibility.

Agreed. How is a TV documentary up for the Oscars? These two bodies need to sit down and decide how it's going to work. If something wants the Oscar it should have to be screened in theatres before a TV airing and if something wants an Emmy it's first viewing should be on TV.

Then what you do with a streaming platform is a whole other mess, but if something airs on HBO, it shouldn't be Oscar eligible.

at this point, tv movies and limited series that pull the ~were a 10-hour movie~ shit should be able to compete for oscars too if theyre just gonna let stuff double-dip with no reprecussions.

I thought they changed the rules about that after OJ: Made in America. They certainly should've, that was insane.

i feel like the inventor was just like its subject-- lots of self-perceived 'style' and no substance. like how many closeups do we really need of that dry haired blonde lady holding a little thing of blood??? i'm so mad that was the documentary that came out of the scam because there was SO MUCH good stuff in the book

one of the latest documentaries i watched was tell me who i am on netflix and while i'm usually more into verite stuff i really really liked it

totally agreed! despite all the hype and love for the documentary, it's actually really underwhelming and insubstantial. very disappointing considering the subject matter and its reliance on the excellent journalistic work of John Carreyrou, who I think would have been awarded pulitzer in a slower year (obv, 2016 was a big year in reporting...)

And the people of the academy will watch less than four.

Last documentary I watched was The Square, and wasn't that a frustrating one.
