i have such weird feelings about this movie. technically, i think it was a well done, well acted film. love the costume design, i liked the sets, i liked the cast. but i just didn't connect with it and didn't enjoy it. all of the "deeper" narratives i felt were actually really shallow and thinly developed. i thought his personal story was the most compelling and if it was just a story about a man's downward spiral after being rejected by society then i think i would like it more, but whenever the movie tried to touch on larger topics like class it fell flat for me. my friend was ascribing all these thought provoking motives to the director-his exploration of class, government, black women, etc. and i'm just side-eyeing her cause i think that's giving him way too much credit.

yeah my thoughts on it were that it kept bringing up topics but it didn't really have anything to say about them? It was just like "MENTAL ILLNESS ____" "VIOLENCE ______". I also thought the first part of the movie was pretty disjointed which if I was being generous I would say it was on purpose to echo his mental state, but it becomes a lot more cohesive when he is clearly getting less stable so that doesn't really make sense.

Surprised they haven't announced a sequel.

To be a fly in the wall at Jared Leto's agents office.

DC's such a mess rn. They haven't done anything about an Aquaman sequel either but I have a feeling J*hnny D*pp is a big factor in that...

Nah but he's a big deal in Warner Bros/DC thanks to the Fantastic Beasts movies and he seems hella pressed Amber is flourishing so I wouldn't be surprising if he was creating problems for it bts ala Jared Leto...

It's still sad that it's a comic book film but hey ho if this puts an end to convoluted garbage comic book films (mostly Dc) then I'm here for it.

I feel like the only person who genuinely didn't enjoy this movie. I've seen it twice thanks to friends wanting to see it and having an Unlimited card so it didn't cost me, which I'm happy about.

[Spoiler (click to open)]I absolutely loathe the 'mental illness is an excuse for MASS MURDER' narrative. Like.. okay?! And how the fuck did she keep him if he was adopted after that documented abuse? I know it's Gotham, I know it's a comic movie so take it with a grain of salt but the fact it all went mob mentality because three rich assholes were murdered (not even mob mentality from the assholes side at that) is... something I couldn't buy in to.

I get the hype for the acting, I do. I think it's a stretch for all the other hype though. Just my opinion of course.

Working with kids. I can tell you there's ridiculous circumstances in which some parents can keep their children even after untold abuse. And it's supposed to be 80s so God knows how bad it was in the past.

Yup, same. They push hard for reunification because they don't want to "break up families".

Excuse me but sometimes the family is ALREADY broken thanks to the parents being total shits. Give the kid(s) a chance to be in a home that actually cares!

Nah, IA. I was really looking forward to it, but it just fell really flat for me. I know it's a 'fantasy' world (Gotham), but he got away with so many things even though the movie took a very realistic angle.
