Taylor Swift comments on artists choosing to release standalone singles instead of albums

Music Week asks Taylor Swift about trend in which artists opt to release standalone singles rather than an album:

"As long as people dropping just singles want to be doing that, then I'm fine with it, but it feels like a big general wave that's been pressured by people in power” pic.twitter.com/og3EiyldLt

I think it makes sense with the way people are consuming music now. Honestly, expecting people to commit that much time to a bunch of songs that were too mediocre to be singles is kind of a lot. Every once in a while there are albums that are great too to the bottom but you usually only get a couple good songs.

I do really hope that in the future artists have more of a say over strategy. We’re not just supposed to make art and hand it to a team that masterminds it.”

??? this is the most delusional thing she's ever said lmao. she's like the posterchild of handing shitty music to a team that masterminds its success pls. also it just sounds like she's still pressed that lil nas x was able to drop 782973897 versions of otr and out-chart her. it's not like dropping random singles or mixtapes is new -- the rest of the industry is just now catching up to the shit that rappers do.

i thought she was referring to artists like Tinashe and Rita Ora and Normani whose labels make them cycle through dozens of singles, scrap whole albums, and then start over again. It seems like a miserable and frustrating cycle

okay tru, that's definitely a valid excuse for ppl like tinashe and normani who are being sidelined by the shit-show that is rca.

The state of music gets sadder by the day. I prefer an album and a few singles off that album. It would indicate a broader body of work and not singles that are just chasing trends.

Streaming really fucked up the game.

That's true. There's no point releasing singles digitally or especially physically (some still release them though, limited editions or promos), because some artists don't get airplay or Youtube views or even their stream numbers are ridiculously low. Artists that were big last decade can barely scrap into top 100 because music has become similar to fast food. Quantity, not quality.

Although, streaming is more profitable for independent artists, who don't sell stadiums or arenas, but are creative and make decent music.
