I also saw a tweet from Judd Apatow also essentially saying this threatens the art of what they put on Netflix. What am I missing? Is it that they'd have to optimise their footage to also suit faster playback speeds in post, or is there something else to this that's getting them worked up? Would it affect the way they actually direct or shoot scenes? Genuinely curious.

I suspect it's more that you're not experiencing it as the creator intended you to - a dramatic pause here, a slow pan there, etc.

Filmmakers and especially editors, put a lot of thought into pacing. It's an art form of it's own and allowing people to speed through things would muddle the original intention.

I watched Dangerous Liasons on YouTube sped up, then a couple months later when it was on HBO at normal speed, and I do have to say it was a very different experience.

I do this all the time on my VLC, if the movie/tv show is boring I just speed up and read the subtitles.
