Is the concept here you have the regular version of the Pokémon then can Gigantamax power-up that makes those Pokémon bigger and more powerful with new moves?

All Pokémon can Dynamax turning into giant energy projection kaiju thing for 3 turns and transforming their moves into special ones with added effects, but certain species change physically in a drastic way as well, these are Gigantamax forms

Thank you! Definitely more complicated than I would’ve thought

All of them can do Dynamax (get bigger for 3 turns), but there are some species that get special forms called Gigantamax. And for the species that get special forms, not all Pokemon of that species get them. Pikachu and Eevee for instance can only turn into these new forms if you have save data from Let's Go Pikachu or Eevee (because that will get you a 'special' Pikachu/Eevee) and Meowth can only turn into Long Cat if you claim a special Meowth before a certain date in January you get for buying the game. Apparently for the other ones that can Gigantimax you have to catch them in Raid Battles.

The fandom has been really split on this game.
It seems like the "casual" Pokemon fans are excited and hyped with every new bit of information released.
However the avid/hardcore fans are very disappointed with what Sword & Shield is shaping up to be...

I just think the hardcore fanbase that is disappointed is just louder than the hardcore fanbase that's excited. That's also the same fanbase who complained about Black and White and now we have to deal with constant Kanto nostalgia.

I follow people who've been playing for years and everyone seems excited. Some are disappointed by some things, but not to the extent of boycotting/hashtagging.

i am a little disappointed by this game because megas finally revitalized pokemon that are now getting dropped in the dust, and sun and moon was a way to win back the crowd after gen V causing people to leave.

I think of this game as growing pains. They have a lot of work to do to eventually get the full pokedex onto the switch, which is definitely their long term goal. The next ones (maybe diamond/pearl remakes?) will win back the crowd again and feel fuller/more fleshed out and people will lose their minds at the nostalgia because those games along w gen III are universally acclaimed and clamored for so I will support, but I am more excited for animal crossing than pokemon and i never thought it'd get to that point

I am glad butterfree is getting some love. And she is serving Mothra realness! The other pokemon are all so overused at this point. Pikachu and Charizard especially.

I understand why they're used, they're both iconic but there's no reason for Charizard being Leon's ace Pokemon. Like...none at all. That's where I draw the line!
