i recently started working in an office that's located in the suburbs of the city i live in where my co-workers are all very WASP-y and it's the first time in my life i've been self-conscious about being polish. like one of my co-workers keeps spelling my last name wrong on legal documents and when i correct her she just shrugs her shoulders. now she doesn't ask me to help with things and instead asks my co-worker who has a simple last name. and if they're being this weird about me being polish then there's no hope for me to be open about being a lesbian

I literally do not understand the hate towards Poles. I think my family never explained whether they had any hate or vitriol when they immigrated here from Poland. I have had issues with my last name (part of the reason I was so eager to take my husband's English name) but never anything like what you're experiencing. I get it (people are garbage), but at the same time I don't get it.
