The Man Who Created Labradoodles Regrets Breeding Them

Labradoodles are one of the most popular designer dog breeds in the world. But the man who first bred them calls it his "life's regret."
  • Wally Conran is an Australian man who crossbred a Labrador and a standard poodle in 1989 for a woman who needed a service dog, but whose husband was allergic to dog hair. But soon, irresponsible breeders were creating inbred monsters.

“I opened a Pandora box and released a Frankenstein monster.”

  • The breed is often unstable:

“I find that the biggest majority are either crazy or have a hereditary problem.”

  • It is now his life mission to stop irresponsible breeders.

"These unethical, ruthless people - to breed these dogs and sell them for big bucks - that’s my big regret.”

“People are just breeding for the money... Unscrupulous breeders are crossing poodles with inappropriate dogs simply so they can say they were the first to do it.”

Labradoodles are one of the most popular breeds among celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston, Joe Biden, Christie Brinkley, and Bradley Cooper.
