Well as a black gay I sure as hell do! For me its odd in that with there not being able to go out and have club life when I was younger what gay slang I did learn was from media while knowing it came from black gay community.
It's fine that it - and black slang in general - has become this mainstream but non black LGBTQ people need to a) recognize where it comes from and b) not spread false origins because more than once I've run into white people online trying to claim one of our slang terms actually means something else/worse than what they think - one good example was fuckboy being mistaken for a derogatory transman term (c-boy) and people having to explain to whites that it isn't the same.
Also C) non black people - especially white people TBQH - need to STOP proclaiming our slang to be outdated/over when they're done with it because who gave you the jurisdiction of it in the first place? NO BODY SIS!
For fucking real. They can use “monkas” 9263739 times a day for the past 7 years like every platform is twitch or some shit, but then want to cancel black slang after two days because their melanin-deficient brethren overuse it in haphazard attempts to be “cool”. 😒
Mte. I don't think it's always inherently wrong to use terms originated by other subcultures, but it's important to remember the origin. Esp when black and latina gay men and trans women are still treated so poorly.
ia especially since, if you think about it, most "mainstream" slang comes from black culture at some point. I just also hate when people are ignorant of the origins and fail to pay respect.
I have a colleague (middle aged white lady) that put "Yas!" as a comment on an essay that someone turned in and ever since then, I've made it a point to never use that phrase again.
