Dialect coach Erik Singer once again takes a look at idiolects, better known as the specific way one individual speaks. Did Rami Malek do a good job speaking through prosthetics to become Freddie Mercury? How accurate was Jennifer Lawrence's Long Island accent in Joy? Did Christian Bale nail former Vice President Dick Cheney?

That's my shit! Love watching videos where experts break down accents. It's like one of my fav things in movies to hear what work actors have done with their accent. I remember Jennifer Lawrence being mediocre at best in Red Sparrow. As Im Russian myself and I live in USA I hear my mom's friends speak English all the time, and she was very very off, the best Russian accent I heard I believe is Kate Mulgrew as Red is OITNB.

you really liked Red's accent? __planitbremix September 16 2019, 21:25:24 UTC
I coulda swore I read someone else on here say they thought her accent sounded "stereotypical" and "fake". Granted I'm not Russian, but I liked hearing it, so hearing you said it was believable..allrighty then!

Oh yeah for sure. My husband agrees with that, and he is Russian too (well he is Ukraninan but it's like the same). Red often use few Russian words (usually food names) in her vocabulary and swears in Russian too, which Russian people do all the time. And Im not sure how she sounded "stereotypical" if that's exactly how Brighton Beach folks talk here and she actually played a person who had a business in Brighton Beach. She was excellent in her accent and extremely believable.

i love these videos so much. i always find linguistics so interesting to learn about! i found knowing a little about linguistics does help a lot with learning a language too. my best friend is german and taught me basic german words/phrases. She really put an emphasis on where your tongue is make certain sounds (especially the -ch sound) and because of that when I speak German to native German speakers they always compliment me on my "accent" like sure it might be very heavy Bavarian influenced but its much better than most Americans. lol

Knowing where you tongue goes when you pronounce a sound helps so much when learning to speak a language. I’ve been learning Korean and there’s a handful of sounds that still throw me off but a podcast mentioned the position of your tongue when you pronounce the L sound and it was like an ‘oh!’ moment when I tried it. I sort of have started seeking out lessons that emphasize that kind of stuff since.

Man, this would be such a nerdily cool job.

OT: lmao that racist SNL d-bag got fired because they "weren't aware" of his shitty material. Yeah the fuck right, that's why they picked him and they're just embarrassed they got caught so fast.

wtf is this "chicago" accent lurkurheartout September 16 2019, 20:52:53 UTC

Collin Farrell's Chicago accent in Widows makes me giggle. There is certain scenes were he is one exaggeration from being part of the Bill Swerski's Superfans tbh. I'm very Chicago, with my very noticeable South Side Chicago accent to non Chicago people and I sound nothing like that.

I love him, but his American accents are...a bit all over the place.

I feel like what people think is a Chicago accent real people don't speak with it.

It's like this old timey 1920s gangster exaggeration.

Does he ever do videos on bad accents?

I feel like he's being critical with a lot of these, he's just being insanely polite about it, lol. It's an amusing change from the usual YouTube videos like "52 Reasons Why Endgame Sucks!!!!"

Sometimes he'll toss in some famously egregious accents, but I don't think he's done a video dedicated to terrible accents.

Felicity Jones' accent was super inconsistent during that movie. It was so distracting.
