I think you got it all, he's just an asshole. But it isn't confined to men, women pull stunts like this too, are so careless they get caught cheating in public and it becomes clear they should have just broken up instead of cheating.

I wonder if people like this actually live for the drama. I mean, why be honest and say, "it's over, I'm moving on," when they get a thrill from sneaking around and doing something they know is wrong? Ultimately it's self-destructive behavior that hurts a lot of other people along the way.
