this movie was too bloated yet also lacked a coherent plot, the worst combination.
considering how graphic the gay bashing was in the very first scene, they could've done a much better job ~revealing~ that richie was gay. it wasn't even acknowledged or addressed! just implied, rme.
also still not pleased that the only black Loser got like no backstory aside from some throwaway pennywise-induced memory about his parents being crackheads. tf.
Agreed completely, the movie was about 2 hours and 45 minutes long and still didn’t make a lot of connections with plot points and felt like it had a lot of loose ends. I enjoyed it overall, but there’s no reason it should have went over 2 hours.
ETA I found the black character really annoying and hated that they wrote him that way since he’s the only black character.
James and Bill had the best performances of the grown up Losers and honestly in a rewatch I felt [Spoiler (click to open)] that Eddie did feel the same way about Richie
Also I think that Finn and Bill’s performances were the most complimentary of the kid and adult pairs (besides James and Jaeden tbh way to save Bill from how he is in book canon). Massive projection in this next part of the comment [Spoiler (click to open)] like in the first clubhouse scene and the hammock scene I was surprised at how relaxed Richie was? He made some jokes but he wasn’t as wound up like he was in the first movie. And then there’s that arcade scene that broke my heart. I think it did a good job to point to how Derry, Pennywise, and violent homophobia kind of made Richie destroy that version of himself and made him turn into someone more cynical and closed off like grown up Richie. A spurned romantic like Hader said in another interview. It wasn’t 100% perfect and even just two more scenes could’ve made it better, but I loved the change.
I loved the Pomeranian scene. They were dog dads for a few seconds against their better judgement and it was so funny. But yeah I think they forced the comedy a bit too much, and should’ve just relied on the instincts of the actors like they did in the first instead of scripting jokes
