for years before seeing The Sixth Sense I thought the twist was that [Spoiler (click to open)]the kid was a ghost so when I finally watched it I still had a little surprise lol
omg! I thought the exact same too! I watched the whole movie thinking I knew the twist and then I was actually surprised and ended up loving the movie haha.
It remains one of the few movies that really scares me. The ghosts are so realistic and ordinary. Like the scene with the lady in the kitchen with the wrists? UGHHHH.
That scene ruined my childhood. Especially the bit where she walks past him as he's peeing. I couldn't go to the bathroom at night or be alone in my room with the door open for YEARS
Look Marge, you don't know what it's like. I'm the one out there every day putting his ass on the line. And I'm not out of order! You're out of order. The whole freaking system is out of order. You want the truth? You want the truth?! You can't handle the truth! 'Cause when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo that was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! Forget it marge, it's Chinatown!
i think the set up was done very poorly so it doesn't pay off past the first vieweing if you're invested and haven't been spoiled and can't see it for yourself.
it makes absolutely no sense that cole never tells malcolm that he's a ghost. his biggest fear are ghosts! they scare him and hurt him and he meets one that not only doesn't scare or hurt him, but is kind to him and helps him and not once does cole have a throwaway line like "i like you. you're not like the rest." really...? it's forced for the sake of the twist and all of the work to make it work becomes glaring on repeated viewings.
i don’t think cole realizes malcolm is dead initially. there’s a BTS video where m. night talks about how many of malcolm’s scenes were shot in a way that cole sees him with his mom, or when he shows up to his school and it seems like he interacts with people even though he doesn’t. plus, malcolm is a benevolent ghost, so that probably puts cole at ease rather than being scared.
yeah that was also part of the point for the viewer, too. Honestly one of the reasons why it works so well for me is because how well it's been done. There are so many subtle clues that make you go DUH on the second viewing. And I know people wanna figure things out the first time around, but my fave books and movies are those that make me watch it a second time knowing what I do now. But that only works when the clues are actually there and you just didn't get them.

Campfire Tales. Which was exactly how I was able to see The Sixth Sense's twist coming.

I would bet coin money as I'm poor, that the writers of campfire tales watched 1962's " Carnival of lost souls"
