Stephen Colbert's thoughts on grief stun Anderson Cooper

Aug 19, 2019 07:47

You said "what punishment of gods are not gifts. Do you really believe that?" @andersoncooper, choking back tears, asks Stephen Colbert, as they discuss grief.

"Yes," replies the comedian. "It's a gift to exist and with existence comes suffering. There's no escaping that." pic.twitter.com/p5rUUhZKxq

Life being a gift doesn't mean it's all positive. That's literally what he's saying in the quote. When you appreciate and see the meaning in life, every experience becomes rewarding even if it's not a ~positive one.

"It's a gift to exist and with existence comes suffering. There's no escaping that."

That’s probably an easy thing to say when you’re an incredibly wealthy white man with (presumably) no serious health issues. I mean, I get where he’s coming from but it’s such a blatantly privileged statement.

It sounds like the context of that statement is around coping with the death of his father and brother when he was 10.

I consider myself agnostic but since I've lost my mom, sister, and a couple of other close family members, I have found myself a little jealous of those who turn to their faith to help with their grief.

I lost my mom last year and I also have found myself envious of people who have faith and believe they'll see their loved one again. It's just so hard every day.

it’s a very catholic way to look at things which is unsurprising knowing colbert. i’m sure his perspective is shaped from having multiple family members die in a plane crash when he was a kid

Existence is a gift. At the end of it you were the one to be born from a million.

However the current world makes us feel hopeless and pointless. And the world is a cage right now.

But who knows something good hopefully is wait down the line. Maybe a zombie apocalypse hits a Maga rally.
