I liked Head Above Water but the rest of the album was pretty lame... I don't think she's a great songwriter at all, way too literal and way too cliche
I feel like her songwriting style worked with the pop/punk genre, because the lyrics and melodies of the genre are often very simplistic (no shade @ legit punk musicians). but when she tries to write something serious, it doesn't work. the lyrics and tbh the video as a whole feels like a high schooler TRYING to be deep and dark and edgy, rather than something that's organically dark and meaningful.
Punk music is like the same 5 bar chords over and over lmao. Especially pop punk, which also kind of edged out the political message of punk music (which is why I love Green Day so much, they’re pop punk to the core but they kept the political idealogy that is essential to the punk part)
Avril was perfect for the pop punk genre bc she can write the super basic, appeals to the average 16 year old, safe rebellious stuff.
I get that she grew up and that she never actually wanted to do rock music in the first place, but damn it fit her well.
