meh... Nick Cave just gave an interview where he argued that the greatness of Morrissey's work as part of the Smiths, or his early albums, isn't diminished by his present racist outspokenness. But Morrissey as a human is. That doesn't change the fact that, say, This Charming Man or How Soon is Now, are just really good records.

I guess I agree about his work with the Smiths, but Morrissey was one of my favorite artists, and his early solo work is amazing. But I get no joy out of listening to it now, and I can't help but reflecting on the racist, and/or populist, undertones of a lot of the singles I used to not think twice about.

The Smiths/early solo Morrissey meant so much to me as a teenager. For a while I could at least mentally separate The Smiths from Morrissey's heinous views, but it has been almost impossible to do it the past few years. When Nick Cave talked about the great personal loss people would feel when they couldn't ignore him as a person and enjoy the songs the way they used to, I felt that. My best friend of more than a decade and I bonded for the first time by dancing to This Charming Man together. Having memories like that tainted genuinely hurts. And like you said, it paints the old songs in a new uglier light.

I've decided that I'll allow myself to very occasionally pull out my old Smiths cds if I'm feeling nostalgic, but I'm not streaming, buying tickets to shows, or doing anything that would put new money in his pockets. I purposely bought tickets to see Mitski the same night he's in town in September.

He was a king when you were a depressed teen and first discovered his music. Then you learn he’s a piece of shit and nah. Pass
