Weird how in the book he refused to return to KL to help or be with Cersei even though she was facing just as grave a threat to her life, as far as he knew...if you know, his whole life has been about protecting Cersei and there was no option to stay away.

Agreed. But he'll definitely reunite with Cersei in the books too and we don't know what his motivations will be

Book Jaime is better than Show Jaime, writing wise. He didn’t rape Cersei, for one.

Lena was honestly the MVP of this show during the entire time. She made a one note villain intriguing and complicated.

Most improved is definitely Emilia. She really elevated her acting in the last 2 season despite the material.

The idea that he was going to just let her die alone, is too horrible for him

So he did go back with the intention of ~dying in her arms? Because before he said something about Jaime intending to rescue her. And Jaime didn't think Bronn would really kill them, but did Cersei, or was that just yet another 'women never mean what they say' classic D&D move? lol it's almost as if they planned it badly.

ITA that Jaime/Brienne were never going to be endgame in a happy way and he and Cersei were always destined to die together, but I still think he should've sacrificed himself in order to kill her as his final act of redemption. I'm just so annoyed that that great 'breakup' scene in 7x07 meant literally nothing in the end.

I’m not necessarily bitter about this ending, although Jaime/Brienne was my ship and had been for over a decade! I’m mad that it was all so random. With more time, I think there could have been a good story about a man who is trying to get out of a toxic relationship but just can’t, even when happiness is just at hand... we’ve all seen (been?) people like that. But it was rushed and frankly stupid. For example, they had Jaime say he doesn’t care about the innocents in KL when HIS MAJOR BACKSTORY is that he sacrificed his honor and his future by killing the king he was sworn to protect... to defend the innocents of KL!!!!!

They should have had him go back to Cersei to kill her. But whatever.

In conclusion, Nikolaj CW and Lena Headey WERE Cersei and Jaime; their performances were beyond incredible and I’ll always be grateful to them for bringing such depth to the show.
