Anyway this is common procedure if you don't have a valid document. They were nice enough to let her apply for a new visa right there and wait til the following day to see if it was approved (it really is THAT easy to get a visa) instead of putting her on a plane right then and there. She's currently in the airport hotel.
Brazilians with actual valid visas can face detention for much longer in US airports while immigration decides whether to let us in, and we don't get food or water either, or translators, nor do we wait in nice hotels in the airport. This has happened to multiple people I know.
