April 17, 2019- Ryan Murphy, who recently signed a $300 million overall deal with Netflix, is bringing two recent Broadway productions to the streaming service.
- Today on Instagram, he announced a film adaptation of the revival of The Boys in the Band, which he produced on Broadway last summer. It starred Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Tuc Watkins, Michael Benjamin Washington and Brian Hutchinson, all of whom are returning for the film.
- The Boys in the Band is Mart Crowley's play about a group of gay New Yorkers attending a birthday party in the pre-Stonewall era. Joe Mantello, who directed the sold out revival, is returning to direct the film adaptation.
- A film adaptation of The Prom, a musical currently running on Broadway, was announced last week.
- Netflix has invested in theater content prior to the Murphy deal. A live taping of Bruce Springsteen's recent Broadway show Springsteen on Broadway is currently available to stream, as is a live taping of the comedy Oh, Hello On Broadway. Netflix is also producing a film adaptation of the Kerry Washington-starring play American Son.
