This is honestly such a problem with Asian celebrity fan pics. So often you can't even see their actual skin tone because those fans think paler is better, FOH!

One being classism: poor people worked under the sun and had darker skin. Being darker was/is perceived as being dirty.
People from higher class had fair skin.
The idea of purity
There's also an issue of internalized racism against south east asian who usually have a darker skin tone.
The western standard of beauty also play a part I suppose (especially in most "recent" years)
In europe it used to be the same (whiter=richer)
But it shifted around the 30's (?) because being taned meant being able to aford holidays
