Model and activist Nyle DiMarco appeared on last night's "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" to discuss the many ways police have no clue how to interact with deaf people.
My mum's a teacher of the deaf so I grew up with an interest and an awareness, but I only know the most basic signs now. Like we can have tiny signed conversations if necessary because my grandma's asleep in the room. I once spent 25 minutes rewatching a 1min unsubtitled video by an art gallery that was advertising a BSL tour, and trying to translate it lol (I did ok, eventually). I'd love proper classes but I feel like the syntax and the spatial grammar will always be beyond my abilities.
I'm actually enrolling to an AUSLAN (Australian SL) beginners course next month. My ultimate aim is to study towards becoming an AUSLAN interpreter. The fact that government departments don't seem to know how to communicate with the deaf community is troubling, and I hope that I will be able to help in changing that.

That video where that cop attacked that blind man was awfully hard to watch.
I LOVE Nyle. Not only is he out of this world gorgeous but he's doing great work for the deaf community. Bless him.
