I really wish the producers had stood up and said no, we can generate good drama without falling back on sexual assault.

I just don't get why they think women want rape in their fantasy at all. Like you can do time travel, but all of your female characters still need to endure trial by sexual assault? Fuck off.

Right? Does Diana Gabaldon hold their children at gunpoint to keep them from changing the story or something?

I mean, you're assuming that the writers aren't fans of the books/supporters of this kind of narrative anyway.

My partner, on hearing that he was replacing Matt Smith in The Crown: "Oh, is that how they explain why Queen E. and Phil never got divorced? That magically he was just much hotter and more talented overnight?"

I mostly enjoyed the first season, but by the time Jamie got raped at the end of Season 1 (after his wife and his sister were assaulted) I just knew I was done. I think I'm going to institute a hard cutoff of any shows that use rape or sexual assault as a dramatic device for 2019, at least. It's just so tired and tiring. Especially the way it's often treated as a "trial" for the person's sexual partner or family.

You made it farther than I did. The episode where Jamie was rather forcefully trying to making Claire submit to him after their wedding was too much for me and I stopped before it was even over. I gather that he was better to her later in the series but I really didn't care to stick around for that character development

I’m not watching or reading anything where people get sexually assaulted. It’s bad when you don’t know it but the moment where I discover that it’s a part of the movie I just stop watching.

I hope this scene will get people to start holding Outlander accountable for how it uses rape. It was a huge problem in the books and the writers/producers constantly want to play this game where they pretend that everything gross in them can be defended by "history."
