I am certainly more intrigued by the cover and will go for something aesthetically pleasing.

We do the same thing at the library. We put the nicest/most interesting covers on display and they're always taken over the plain ones.

Same re: the library. If someone else has put an old or ugly book on display, I'll always swap it out for a newer and prettier one.

i handle all the adult fiction and some covers are just so plain and butt ugly i just don't understand what the publishing house is DOING. if the author is unknown, why make the book shit brown and the name and title embossed and halfway illegible. who the hell is going to feel tempted to pick that up?

We got this set of classic books that are in faux leather binding but they're like teal and bright pink and purple. They're much more appealing than other versions. When we first got them, we just hugged them because they were so nice and they were going to be torn apart eventually.

I think it's impossible to not judge books at least somewhat by their cover

I'm turned off by weird cartoony covers like this

yep I really dislike these covers too. for the longest time I didn't pick up "the pursuit of love" because this was the default cover on goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/835458.The_Pursuit_of_Love

it's a great book though. my favourite cover for it is this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pursuit-Love-Nancy-Mitford/dp/0241974682

but I also rather like this: https://www.amazon.com/Pursuit-Love-Nancy-Mitford/dp/0307740811

Yikes @ that first cover.

Though clicking on it made me very curious about it, and I just reserved a copy on my library's online system. Thanks for the rec.

man I hate trying to find new books to read, I know some people love the hunt (or I assume some people do? I guess I've never seen anyone say that lol) but I just want a magical curated list of books that I'm guaranteed to love

LMAO I 100% judge books by their covers.

I haven't even read it yet, it I bought this copy of Jane Eyre solely because I loved the cover so much.

there are a lot of pretty Eyres but my teen goth self will always have a soft spot for Dame Darcy's hilariously dramatique illustrated edition
