Indie Film Release Guide: November 9th [An ONTD Original]

There are several major studio wide releases this week, but as always, there are many, many more indies for you to peruse. On the heels of last weekend's double dose of Orson Welles films, Netflix releases two more films this week - Chris Pine's Outlaw King, and the Coen Brothers' latest effort The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. And this is the best week for LGBT indies in a long time, with Lez Bomb, Postcards from London and Pimp all featuring LGBT characters.

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia and Disney. Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Plot: An anthology film comprised of six stories, each dealing with a different aspect of life in the Old West.
What you should know: This is the longest film by the Coen Brothers, and the first to be shot digitally.

What you should know: This is director Sam Boyd’s first feature film.

The Long, Dumb Road

The Delinquent Season

Plot: Two middle-class Dublin couples find their seemingly idyllic lives and marriages unravelling at the seams after an altercation causes cracks to appear in both relationships.
What you should know: Cillian has starred in four other films written by Mark O’Rowe, but this is O’Rowe’s directorial debut.

What you should know: The Huffington Post calls it the “queer holiday movie you’ve been waiting for”.

The New Romantic

Genre: Drama
Plot: Beautiful Essex boy Jim, who, having traveled from the suburbs, finds himself in Soho searching for fame, fortune and cultural stimulation. Down on his luck, he meets with a gang of unusual high class male escorts who specialize in post-coital conversation. What follows is Jim’s comic descent from unsuccessful escort, to artist’s muse and art authenticator - a journey complicated by a rare psychosomatic condition called ‘Stendhal Syndrome’.
What you should know: If you’re looking for a realistic film about escorts, this isn’t it. But it’s been praised for its dreamy visuals, and is the director's first film since 1994's Postcards from America.

What you should know: It’s based on the Oscar-nominated short of the same name.
