i can't believe i'm saying this, but i think, even if i liked some songs on DW more, sweetener is a much more cohesive effort. the pharrell tracks aren't even bad. they're not going to revolutionize pop, but he at least sounds inspired to be on this record. the major detractor here is that ariana is at the point where she wants to make music more personal, weird and experimental but she's also obligated to provide some bops for her fan base
( ... )
IA with the sequencing. I meant just from a sonic level, Pharrell's productions all sound like their own collection and the max martin tracks sound like their own collection and her attempts to bridge them are kind of weak (good for them for focusing on her themes of positivity and uplifting energy). Their attempts to go together aren't the smoothest (and it's what I was getting at with the last sentence in the rift between her desires to be weirder and her reality of being a profitable pop star with a corporate behemoth to maintain) but, overall, as an album I liked it and was more interested in her work afterwards than when I started.
I don't think it'll be looked at as her best effort, but I think when we look back at her discography we'll be able to point to this album as when she became her own artist and really started trying to forge her own music. I think the best is ahead of her, but I think a lot of the people in these comments will still be attached to DW.
