Bryan Fuller accuses "Bohemian Rhapsody" of het-washing and ignoring AIDS in synopsis

ANYONE ELSE MILDLY ANNOYED (enough to tweet about it) THAT THE #BohemianRapsody TRAILER FEATURES GAY/BI SUPERSTAR FREDDIE MERCURY FLIRTING WITH AND TWIRLING WITH A WOMAN BUT NO INDICATION OF HIS LOVE OF MEN?

Wow Rami still looks ridiculous lmao. I can't believe people were loving the trailer.

I love Rami as Elliot on Mr. Robot, but his facial features and bug-eyes do not make him look like Freddie Mercury at all. Those tragic wigs don't help either.

Not to defend whoever made the trailer, but couldn't it be they didn't use the word AIDS per se because... well, back then (or at least, for the majority of time the movie will cover) the illness was not known as that?

It was called GRID. Gay Related Immune Deficiency.

Not to mention that Freddie himself didn't admit to having AIDS until like a month before he passed. And according to the band members, he admitted it and essentially made it clear that that was all he was going to say about it and that was that.

Yup, it is in the trailer! It's very brief but it's there, but people who might not know how important Mary Austin was to Freddie take her trailer appearances as "het-washing," I guess.

I was gonna say, as skeptical as I am about this movie, Mary was a big part of his life, especially in the 70s, so I’ll reserve judgement on any het-washing for now.

Exactly my thoughts. She was the love of his life and so important to him. And the scene with the guy was very fast, but I did catch it and tbh it's more than I expected to see. lol

Straight people have been really pissing me off this week. Not even really related to this, but just a general thing that's been happening lol.

And I didn't expect the trailer to really show much of his relationships with men tbh. They still gotta sell those tickets to the hets with their delicate sensibilities. I was just more disappointed that it doesn't look very good.

there is a guy in the trailer though and also a trailer is not the whole movie. ppl complain when trailers show too much and complain when they don’t show enough. bitch after the movie’s come out.

they’re also showing him and mary in the trailer who is arguably the most important person in his life. that’s not ~het-washing~ when it’s was his actual life. god that tweet just didn’t come out right at all.

mte to all you said. To me, it's crazy that people honestly believe a Freddie Mercury movie could brush over his sexuality, considering it's like the second most well-known fact about Freddie himself.

And I understand most people are casual fans and might not know much about the history of Freddie/Queen, but calling Mary Austin "a woman", as I've seen a lot of comments? lmao. To me, it's the same people who take SBC's words as gospel and seem to wish for a movie solely about Freddie fucking men, doing drugs and then dying.

I mean sis let's be real was there a reason for SBC to lie? His story about the other Queen members sounded realistic I don't even remember them denying it. And let's be real fucking guys/doing drugs/dying was a part of his story, basing the whole movie around those facts would be sensationalist, but brushing them under the rug is also not the best thing
