i have a lot of thoughts on this. people are so desperate to demonize addicts and act like people who become addicted to opiods because of their chronic pain are somehow different to other addicts. i noticed a lot of talk around prince that he wasnt like "those" addicts, because he had chronic pain. so somehow he wasnt really an addict? i saw some wild comments here, and notice it anytime someone with chronic pain ODs. the reality is it doesnt really matter how it starts or why it starts, the end game is the same- jails institution or death (unless you are able to get sober)
It's like they think the people who started out prescribed to them for legit reasons didn't "choose" to become addicted, as if anyone does. A guy I went to high school with died of a heroin overdose last year stemming from him being prescribed pain meds after a car accident. Him getting addicted to them, turning to heroin, going to rehab and getting out and overdosing all happened within a year. But if it had just started out as him using heroin the reactions would not have been the same.
IDK if maybe people don't consider addiction to me a mental health issue but I see people who are really sympathetic to people dealing with any other one, but have no sympathy for addicts.
