So...does Shuri join the Avengers in any run of the comics or w/e? I'm guessing her inclusion in all these things is a bit of a last-moment effort based on her (Justified!) popularity from BP.

She has shown up in the Marvel wide events but she's never been on the Avengers or any official team like that. Most of her storylines involve her brother and Wakanda. I suspect her inclusion is part popularity and part due to Wakanda playing a major role in the film. Though I wouldn't be too surprise if later down the road, they end up making her the Avengers tech person, esp if Iron Man ends up dying.
