Her going ‘don’t pee on me!’ is what I say when I hold babies (which isn’t much, but still). But how did she concentrate on the questions with all the cuteness climbing on her?? When I’m near a doggie all the attention is on them!
This film was incredible! And so African! I loved every second. You can tell that they really spent time trying to make it feel real. Coogler traveled to parts of Africa for research. I got so excited when one of the henchmen said Wallahi. S/O to my fellow 🇸🇴. Sucks that he was most likely tracking women :(( It didn't feel like a caricature of "Africa" at all.
I also left the film feeling really sad for African Americans -- Ryan mentioned it in an interview -- they don't know much about their past. Only that they're most likely from West Africa, but not which tribe or their history. They were robbed of so much. I can't even imagine.
Ita about your last bit, it left me feeling really sad and empty. It also did a really good job for me anyways as a 1st gen african-american (vs black/descended from slaves) as giving me something empowering to cling to from my home and addressing the dual-ended hopelessness you feel. I cried so much for Killmonger and the kids in Oakland.
I feel the same way. I live in Europe now (my parents immigrated from Somalia 20 years ago) and it made want to travel back to Somalia and learn as much as I can about my family's history.
We're lucky in this sense. Our friends in the diaspora don't have that oppertunity.
I'm sorry for getting so emo. It just kinda made me feel so bad for African Americans.
Yeah for sure, in my family's case it's a bit more complicated but at least I have a starting point. I think it also touched on some very important "intercommunity" black issues like africans vs black people.
