I didn't know Porter Scavo was gay.

I've never been able to watch the original 1970 film because just from the trailer alone, I could see this was like the bleakest paean to gay self-loathing. We didn't need that toxic shit then, and we don't need it now. Yes, I know it documents what life was genuinely like for many gay men at the time, but the reliance on the worst kind of closeted, mincing-queen stereotypes diminishes whatever verisimilitude it might have contained.

Maybe this new production will be able to emphasize how much things have changed, but given how not much has been altered in terms of diversity in the casting, I'm not sure that's going to happen either.
