I think it was this. When the twins started their "he died" stuff on instagram last year, they posted a video of him using a walker really struggling to get around. Once that got out he probably decided to just stay upstairs after that. I don't think there was an elevator in the house. He looked really skinny and frail in the last few pictures of him that were shared. He probably just didn't want people to see him like that.
