[spoiler does the dog die?]If it helps, she leaves the military in 2008, the military keeps the dog for work, but finally she's allowed to adopt him when they decide to retire the dog in 2012. He gets to live with her for 8 months, make friends with her other dogs and cats, swim in the pool during the summer, sleep in her bed, get a standing ovation at Yankee stadium, etc before he passes away. I had to look that up because it's bad enough when the dog dies I had to make sure he didn't die violently.
