Netflix has yet to get a non-documentary movie into the Oscar race

Biggest sale at Sundance 2017 too!

I was kind of disappointed it went to Netflix because they botched Beasts of No Nation but hopefully they've learned something and can get Mudbound into the Oscar convo. The producer was saying that part of the conditions of the sale was a campaign for Dee Rees in Best Director (which if successful would make her the first black woman nominated in that category). Anyway good luck to them, I thought the book was terrible but the movie sounds a lot better.

They are doing simultaneous theatrical and online release. That never sits well with the Academy.

Whyyyy?

Did they learn nothing from BoNN? They should try to imitate the Amazon model of pairing up with one of the mini-major studios for the theatrical release.

Hillary Jordan's other book When She Woke is very poignant right about now.
