perhaps an unpopular opinion here, but there are plenty of refugee stories to tell that are playing out TODAY. why are we putting white people through a similar story, why is that more relatable? unless im totally missing the point of what this story is trying to tell?

its like someone saying they have an issue with misogyny because they have daughters/vs seeing women as human beings, regardless

Honestly, let's not be delusional. It just won't work if you don't make the effort of making a story as relatable as possible with an every day european family and say : what if it'd happen here too, how would you react? (Although it actually already happened in many european countries sigh... History gets forgotten so easily).
It just won't, at this point. Unfortunately we're far from an ideal world and if we need this to get the point across, so be it.

i mean, i get it. people don't understand the plight of refugee families. i'm not saying this movie shouldn't exist. but before it got the greenlight, a documentary elevating the voice of refugee children should have, for example.

it's just very sad to me that people will only relate to a white family fleeing london, in their car (or whatever is happening here) yet someone with brown skin in a boat is a CRIMINAL. i want to hear their REAL story, not a dramatized reenactment. there is no need to recreate, this is happening TODAY.

yeah, it's pretty ridiculous that they felt they had to swap in a white family in order to get through to certain people.

I want to see the whole thing now.
It is truly disheartening to see people, especially those who have an immigrant history, spewing such ignorance about the plight of refugees. When you immigrate you're seeking a better situation because there aren't enough options where you once called home. Refugees are literally escaping a world where there were no other options. The fact that people do not see the hypocrisy they embrace and act as if refugees have a choice shows such a lack of human compassion.

I listen to the radio everyday and the lack of empathy is depressing.

i do ER shifts every other week or so, and we often get refugees (who obv don't have family doctors so come to the ER with all kinds of complaints, from common flu to months-old injuries to more 'urgent' problems) & the lack of empathy from fellow health care professionals is just beyond shocking. as soon as people find out they're refugees, they're branded as whiners, fakers, downright liars & def treated differently (read much worse) from pretty much everyone else - excluding maybe addicts. and i'm in Switzerland, so about 75% of the hospital staff is foreign!! it's sf depressing.
