ONTD Original: Y2K, A year of one hit wonders

There was hardly a more confusing era in music than the early part of the 21st century. As the 90's passed and we moved into Y2K, music didn't have a big boom period for any one genre. So we were briefly bombarded with a horde of one-hit wonders. 16 years ago, artists like Sonique, Ruff Endz and Eiffel 65 were topping the charts. These artists who created their major year 2000 hits were never able to replicate the success. However, their songs always bring back the nostalgia. 2000 begins our 1990's One hit wonder series, so let's take a look at some of the best one hit wonders of the year!
The Product G&B - Maria Maria
The Product G&B owes all their success to Santana, who featured them on his mega-hit album, Supernatural. The duo sang the vocals on “Maria Maria." The song peaked at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the 2000 Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. This was of course a mega hit for Santana, but this duo who wasn’t honored with any awards, hasn’t released an album nor any thing near a hit since.
Samantha Mumba - Gotta Tell You
Samantha Mumba’s TRL-friendly debut single peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was also a huge international hit. She had another bop, "Lately" but nothing topped her debut and soon she faded away.
Macy Gray - I Try
Gray wrote the lyrics to this song. It was produced shortly after her split from her husband and father of her three children and exposed the pain she felt doing it alone. This was her only appearance on the Hot 100 in America, peaking at no. 5 on the Hot 100 and earning her a "Best New Artist" VMA. However, she did attain more than one-hit-wonder status in Europe and Australia.
Ruff Endz - No More
Baltimore R&B duo Ruff Endz went all the way to No. 5 with "No More" in September 2000. But the group never saw the top 10 again after that; they only reached No. 49 with "Someone to Love You" in June 2002.
Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee)
Italian dance trio Eiffel 65, whose name was generated at random by a computer program, peaked at No. 6 with the über-catchy "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" in January 2000. They've been blue ever since, as they did not see the Hot 100 for the rest of the decade.
Nine Days - Absolutely (Story of a Girl)
You can't list 2000 one-hit wonders without mentioning this song. Nine days peaked at no. 6 on the Hot 100 with this smash off of their third album. Despite the teenage girls who adored this song, this band never made it past “Absolutely.”
Sonique The- It Feels So Good
In April 2000, Sonique went to No. 8 with her upbeat jam, "It Feels So Good." But the British pop diva hasn't felt so great since; nearly 16 years later, she has yet to appear on the chart again.
Filter - Take A Picture
Released in 1999, Filter's iconic "Take a Picture" peaked at no. 12 on the Hot 100 in February of 2000. The group had all the tools to become a consistently good band, and then they didn’t. Much like their long line of one-hit wonder predecessors, filter neglected their hard rock roots to make a radio-friendly pop hit.
BBMak - Back Here
You weren't watching TRL in 2000 if you haven't heard this song at least once. It's one of the catchiest songs of the year 2000, tbqmfh. After peaking at no. 13 on the Hot 100, the boy band split up in 2003 to pursue failed solo careers.
Carl Thomas - I Wish
Carl slayed lives with his #1 R&B hit "I Wish." It peaked at no. 20 on the Hot 100. While he had a second top 10 hit and two more top 20s on R&B, he never returned to the pop top 40.
Alice DeeJay - Better Off Alone
This is a pop-trance classic with maybe the catchiest synth riff. There weren't a ton of lyrics, but that undeniable synth riff provided just about all the juice the song would need, and it became a worldwide crossover hit. The song peaked at no. 25 on the Hot 100 and topped numerous dance charts.
Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out
WLTDO was a big hit initially in many Caribbean countries. The prominent Calypso rhythm and lyrics were toned down for American listeners. "Who Let the Dogs Out" was a huge hit in the UK peaking at no. 2. Thankfully, this Top 40 hit only peaked at no. 40 on the U.S. Hot 100 but became an overplayed song in it's own right.
