I always felt like his death was stolen from ER . They had Dr Gant committing suicide/having an accident (I don't think they firmly stated it and viewers were left to interpret it ) ending up in the ER and being identified by his beeper beeping for him .

And a few years later, they stole from ER with the stabbing because Meredith gave Lucy feels up and down. Except, you know, she didn't die.
