i'd be careful of buying a new lens soon, because honestly, you will fall into the syndrome of really using one lens the majority of the time and the lens you just bought will be a waste of money (this has happened to about 90% of people i know - doesn't matter what the lens actually is specialized for, it just happens). if you do decide to buy, get the 50mm 1.8 and use the extra money for fun things on your trip, the camera bag, and the book. you're still in school, so school (buying the book) is more important than photography, since you're not taking any photo classes at the moment.

i really like the 50mm but i wouldn't use it all the time. and i'm def. not ever taking a drawing class again so the book is useless too. even more useless since there's a library copy and one in the classroom. and the teacher didn't realize the book was ninety dollars. wtf, lady.

then I definitely don't recommend the 1.4. I've had both, and the 1.8 is just fine. I'd only buy the 1.4 if you were going to make it a primary lens. honestly, they do the same thing and there's no reason to buy the one that's $200 more expensive, especially if you're not planning on using it often.

does your school supply art supplies? if not, well, my drawing materials coated $120 last semester, so you might be spending the money you would have on the book on supplies anyway :\ ugh I hate buying art supplies

i've heard bad things about using the 1.8. and i would use it regulary, it just wouldn't be the only lense i use. i'm going to get the cheaper one anyway, i do this whole cheapexpensivecheap lens cycle every time i look at camera equipment online. i go, ahhh what a bargain. and then, AHHHH POOR QUALITY IMAGES AJDKAF;AF TAKING MYSELF TOO SERIOUSLY. then i go, wtf, that's ridiculous and i'm poor and will always be, let's get the cheap one. no worries.

they don't. they ask for materials fees sometimes but this lady just made us buy our own stuff. i spent $130 on that shit. but it was school supplies money so it wasn't a huge deal.

So I'm not gonna lie and say this was an impromptu desktop shot, but I really *was* already in the process of cleaning and revamping it and yours inspired me to finish (and use stickies)!

I know! I love them :P Unfortunately, there aren't that many out there so I had to do a lot of customization and mix-&-match to get it just how I wanted. I really like your retro kitchen ones, too. They're so you!

sorry i'm a library worker so i have to chime in. in addition to reserves, you may be able to get a copy from your library or another library for a longer check-out period. my library is part of this statewide consortium called Link+ where you have full access to all the books at 40+ libraries. they get delivered in about 4 days and you can keep the book for up to like 5 weeks. i would just contact your reference and research department of the library and see if they have a similar suggestion/program

For what it's worth, when my brother got me my T1i, he told me I should get the 1.4 lens, not the 1.8. I told him I couldn't afford it and got the 1.8, but he said I was making a big mistake.
I want to find a nice pair of cowboy boots in Portland. When are you going to be in Seattle and/or DC? You should stop in Portland if I'm still there! I'm staying in Portland until Aug 24th and going to be in DC Aug 24-27.

I know! He has the 1.2 and it's ridiculously great. He also has a 5D Mk II, so I'm not sure which made the photos I took look that much greater. Lens prices are ridiculous.
Oh no! Too bad we'll be missing each other.

i know. i don't know how people get this much money to blow on camera equipment. i was looking at all of the lenses i want on amazon and i turned to jordan and said, "honey, how would you feel about me giving blow jobs for cash?"

i was kidding of course.

... sort of.

haha no really i was.
