Maybe you can download the book?
I know it's illegal and everything, but $90 is A LOT for a book ..
At my school the teachers even hinted that we could try and see if the books we needed were downloadable, since they knew the books were uber expensive and that students aren't milionaires..

Or maybe you can find it second hand? I did that with one of my most expensive un-downloadable books and I saved over 50% :)

also the 1.4 is $270 more than the 1.8, i'd say get the cheaper lens and then maybe you can get the lens and the bag? i know the 1.4 is better, but the 1.8 is still an amazing little lens and for the price difference i don't know that it's worth it for the 1.4.

please note: that's part of my bias talking because i'm not a huge fan of 50mm lenses. i know they're "prime" lenses and everyone just has to have one but i prefer my wide angle, only because the type of things i like to photograph i feel look better. if you really think that it's going to become a staple in your photography then the 1.4 is obviously worth the money!

Also, I meant to comment on this, but I have the Nikon 50 f1.8 and honestly, it was so cheap that I was able to save the money I would have spend on the 1.4 for other stuff. The 1/2 stop difference isn't that great of a loss for twice the price, especially if you're not working in a completely controlled environment. It also depends on how high of an ISO your camera goes up to, and how heavy it is vs how steady you are able to hold it. The 1.8 also works better in daylight situations, which is what I ultimately shoot in most of the time (unless I'm taking studio classes at school). I suppose if it's a gift though, you may as well go for it! The 1.4 is technically built better anyway. I haven't pulled that lens out in a while, I think I'm going to c:
