“This cannot last any longer.” Jun exclaimed as he walked in the green room.
Sho and Aiba looked up at him curiously.
“Did the interview go badly then?” Sho asked. “Where are Nino and Ohno?”
“Ohno went home, he’s done for the day; and Nino went to the bathroom.” The youngest of the group let out as he fell into the sofa.
He massaged his temples.
“You look exhausted Jun-kun!” Aiba said observing him. “Did you not sleep enough?”
“I’ve slept plenty, thank you very much. But that interview just exhausted me.”
“How come?”
“Because I had to cover for Nino... Again...” He emphasized the last word. “It’s been months since we’ve noticed he changed, right?”
Both his friends nodded thoughtfully.
“What did he do this time?” The newscaster asked, looking up from his newspaper.
“So the interviewer was asking us questions and we each answered in turn. But whenever the question was even remotely connected to loving someone or relationships, Nino would get very distracted and barely answered. It’s like I was sitting with two Ohnos!!!” He exclaimed frustrated.
“I had to speak even more so that there would still be things to put in that poor interviewer’s article! And find jokes to relax the weird mood between the two!”
“Did Ohno...”
“Nope. Still completely clueless...”
“Who’s clueless?” Nino asked quietly as he walked in.
Aiba jumped to his feet. “Heyy! Nino! Have I told you about my latest idea for an experiment?”
Jun stood up and put a hand on Aiba’s shoulder. “No, it’s alright. It’s time to speak about this.”
Aiba frowned and turned to Sho who nodded. “He’s right.”
“What are you talking about? Time to speak about what?” Nino asked, annoyed that they were keeping something from him.
“About you and Ohno.” Sho said quietly.
Nino snorted and walked to where his jacket and bag were hanging.
“There is nothing to talk about. And anyway definitely not with you.”
“Nino, I’m sick of covering for you. We’re going on tour in a couple of weeks, and there’s no way you are forcing this on us then. So either you do something, or you get over this.” Jun exclaimed coldly.
“What did you--” Nino started angrily.
But Aiba quickly took a step in front of Jun and interrupted him.
“What we mean, is that it’s been such a long time, and maybe you should let him know.” The tall man explained.
“Yes. At first I was worried about what it might do to Arashi. But now I think it’ll be much worse if you don’t say anything.” Sho added in a soft tone.
Nino looked at his bandmates, feeling despair rising.
“I... can’t...” He muttered, before grabbing his stuff and walked out without another word.

Once in the car driving him home, he sighed.
He could not bring himself to discuss this with them. All those feelings were just so confusing and embarrassing.
But he knew they were trying to help him, he knew they were right...
That was the worse part... He really wanted to act on their advice! He’d wished it for so long!
Couldn’t they see? Didn’t they realize that he had tried?
“You should let him know” Aiba had said.
If only it was that simple...
He had tried, time and time again, to tell Ohno the truth.
But it had been nearly a year since he had come back from the US, nearly a year since he realized his feelings for Ohno, and he had never managed to pronounce those heavy words.
He was shaken from his thoughts as his phone rang.
It was a message from Sho.
He considered ignoring it, but he felt that this would really put him in the ‘angry teenager’ category and opened the text, sighing.
There was only one sentence.
*** If you can’t tell him, show him Nino. ***
Nino blinked confusedly and raised an eyebrow.
Was Sho telling him to draw a heart and show it to Ohno?
To write a love letter?
To give him chocolates?
Flowers?
“We’re here Ninomiya-san.” The driver said.
Nino got out of the car and remained lost in thoughts until he was in his flat.
He glanced back at his phone. Maybe Sho was onto something... But he couldn’t think of a good way to show his feelings.
On his living room table was a mess of papers, calendars, books, video games, and notebooks.
Something attracted his attention and he picked it up. It was a basic notepad, filled with pages of ideas he’d had months back, when he was trying to impress Ohno with a new song.
He’d never finished it... And anyway, now he didn’t want to impress him, he wanted to tell him... Well... show him.
He flicked through the pages and read the lyrics distractedly, but a word grabbed his attention.
Rainbow.
He smiled. It was very cheesy, but it actually described his feelings well.
Maybe... maybe he could write a song?
They were working on the new album, and he still needed to write his solo. His manager had been very worried about this, but inspiration had eluded Nino the past few months.
But maybe for this?
He took off the jacket he was still wearing, turned to a blank page, grabbed a pen and started writing.
*
A few hours later he received another message, from Aiba this time.
*** I think Sho had a very good idea. You should definitely show him! Maybe I could set up an experiment for this? ***
Nino rolled his eyes and put his phone back down without answering.
He was now sitting next to his keyboard and had started finding a melody. It felt good to compose again.
He had not eaten any diner, but he feared that if he paused for even a moment, he would lose the courage he was somehow feeling.
A part of him thought this was a very stupid idea, but he’d taken his decision.
*
A few more hours later he received one more message. He was about done, and felt exhausted.
The text was from Jun.
Nino glanced at his clock. What was Jun doing up at 3am?
*** Sorry for what I said.
(Sho made me write this) ***
Nino chuckled, feeling his annoyance for the youngest fading. He was under the strong impression that Sho had not asked Jun to do anything like that at all.
He turned back to his keyboard and the music score he’d finished writing.
After playing and singing all the way of it, his fingers were shaking with emotion.
This was it. That’s what he needed to show Ohno.
He dragged himself to his bed, and fell asleep still completely dressed.
*
When he woke up the next morning, the melody of his song was still echoing in his ears.
His heart started pounding as he realized it was their day off and he was going to show Ohno the song.
*
“Hey Ohno... I know it’s our day off, and I’m really sorry to ask this, you probably want to go fishing, but I was wondering... could you come over?”
“Yup, okay.”
*
“So... Wha-- what do you think?” Nino asked, feeling terrified, not looking up from the keyboard.
His voice had trembled through the entire song, and he’d nearly stopped a few times. Knowing Ohno was standing behind him had made the song even more emotional for him.
Now all he could do was wait for Ohno’s reply... and live with it.
But why wasn’t he saying anything?
Maybe he was just going to walk out?
Finally Nino summed up the courage to turn around in his chair.
Ohno was crying.
He was crying.
Nino jumped to his feet in shock.
“Wh-- What? Why are you crying Oh-chan?!” He exclaimed.
The older man looked surprised to realize it himself, and lifted an arm to dry his face on his sleeve.
“Oh.. so--sorry. I’m fine, don’t-- worry.” He muttered as he turned away from Nino. “It was... very nice.”
Nino eyes were still wide from the shock. He was completely lost as to what was happening.
“But-- why are you crying then?” he asked
“You-- You must love her very much...” The older man said quietly, still looking away.
The pianist blinked, trying to make sense of all this, but then it hit him.
Ohno thought the song was about a girl.
He still didn't get it.
In a sudden wave, Nino felt the all the emotions of the past year crashing down on him; all the time he’d lost, the worry, the never-ending wishes...
He couldn’t take it anymore.
“Enough...” He whispered.
“What?”
Nino took the few steps to Ohno, pushed him against the wall, and kissed him.
As their lips touched, Nino transmitted everything he had not been able to do out loud; first his passion, in a blinding heat; then his worry, where he just barely touched in slow hesitant pecks; and finally tenderness, as the kiss deepened, and as the fears made way to trust.
When they came apart, they were panting for air.
“So the song...” The older man let out, their foreheads still touching.
“It’s about you.” The pianist answered quietly.
There was a pause where they just listened to their deep breathing.
“I like you Nino...” Ohno whispered. “I never said anything... because I always thought... you liked girls.”
“Ohno I like you.” Nino whispered, and kissed him once more to prove it.
