What exactly is a 'man (otoko 漢)' to you?

It's not so much my own unique image, but the image of samurai is probably the easiest for the Japanese to understand.
There aren't very many men anymore who will sacrifice themselves for their children or the women they love. That's uncool.
Tbh, I can't help but to think that this is not ~quite right. Personally I think it's the opposite, many loving men want to protect their women and naturally parents want to protect their children. Often, their will to protect is even what makes them grow stronger, I think. I can't deny that there are also many that might not think that they are able to do that, though. However, I think that those are the minority.

Rethinking it, I'd like to know about his thoughts in more detail...
