Fated To Love You? : Prologue
The Pain Of 6 Years Ago
-
If this was heartbreak, I did take on death anytime.
It had been a sun-filled Summer's day, where the remains of the cooling wind from Spring blew across the park. That day, children had littered the park, screaming and shouting with glee as they ran up and down the walk-ways, their mother's sitting primly on picnic blanket's that were unfolded across the grass, sipping glasses of cold lemonade they poured from pitcher's. The chain's of the swing's creaked as brightly clothed children ran up the ladder's, only to come skidding down the slides moments later.
Kim Jaejoong smiled lightly to himself as he leaned back on the bench he was sitting on, positioned comfortably beneath the shade of a tree whose leaves where now fully grown back, a slick spongy green. Fiddling with a ring that hung around a chain from his neck, Jaejoong glanced down at the cool circle of metal that rested against the palm of his hand, a sweet, nervous smile ghosting his features. It had been too long since he last saw him, about a year actually, they had communicated by webcam, by phone, by e-mails, but not face to face, not in a year. Lately, their relationship had felt, well - strained, with Yunho feeling ever more distant each time. But Jaejoong was sure that that was just the missing and distance playing their part. At that time, he had been so sure that their coming together, their seeing one another again would be just the cure to all that, just what they needed to close up their gap. Jaejoong never did notice then, but in a few years , when he looked back, he was sure he would. The soft words of 'I love you', were becoming more infrequent now, with those three words, that one phrase only falling from the lips of Jaejoong himself, and the 'I miss you', along with their terms of endearment, well, they had just as the phrases of 'I love you's, had been falling from one-sided, instead of the both they used to come from.
With a last glance at the ring he held in the palm of his hand, Jaejoong tucked the chain back into his shirt, the coolness of the metal seemingly comfortable against the warm skin of his chest. He, Yunho, would be here soon, and soon, the two lover's would be reunited, their past arguments and tiffs in the past year would then fade, ebbing back into the darkness, as the sweet feeling of 'being in love' would then embrace the two yet again.
Letting his eyes flutter close, as the sounds of light laughter from the children in the park surrounded him, pulling him into what seemed to be a blissful state, Jaejoong turned his face up, letting soft subtle ray's of sunlight that filtered through the tree above him fall onto the side of his face. The beams of light from the Sun caught onto the silvery white strands of his hair, dyed of course, as he shifted in his seat.
Soon, soon he would be reunited with his Yunho.
-
"You dyed your hair."
Those were the words that made Jaejoong's eyes flutter open, as his back straightened. Those were the words that he heard when he had set his first glance on him in a year, him, Yunho, his Yunho. Touching the back of his head, Jaejoong looked up into the face of the man standing before him. He had grow slightly taller, it seemed, and his body, Jaejoong hadn't been able to tell from the pictures, but it seemed like he had bulked up, his body, instead of being thin and lanky now, was well, more grown up, more manly, it seemed. A smile crept onto his face, as Jaejoong stared up in adoration at the man standing before him. He was back, his Yunho was back, they were together again, after one whole year of being apart. Jaejoong had been too caught up then, in the feeling of being reuinted, that he hadn't noticed, had failed to notice the lack of smile or joyful emotion in the slightly younger man's voice.
"Do you like it? I was afraid you did find it too garish."
Finding his voice, as he touched his hair again, tugging at a lock that fell to the side, Jaejoong frowned slightly as he watched the younger man stick his hands into the pockets of his jeans. There was no response.
"It is garish isn't it, you don't...-" He was cut off in mid sentence.
"Jaejoong, lets take a walk." Yunho, not answering, not commenting, but stating.
Slight surprised by his lover's suggestion, Jaejoong brushed his worries aside as he gave a slight shrug of his shoulder's. As long as Yunho wanted too, he would oblige, and maybe, maybe Yunho even had a surprise for him. Standing up, but frowning slightly at the lack of the younger offering him a hand, or an arm, just as he always had, Jaejoong let his arms hang awkwardly at his sides, before he settled with crossing them over his chest while starting on a slow walk down the winding path that led through the park . The couple walked in silence, the only sounds around them being the laughter of shouts from the children, the thudding of their footsteps against the grass. It had worried Jaejoong, yet he thought nothing much of it, pushing his doubts, his worries, his fears aside, as he constantly forced the notion that Yunho had a surprise for him, or that Yunho was jet-lagged, or that Yunho was tired into his head as the strolled.
-
They had reached the end of the path, stepping into the most deserted end of the park where they were shielded by a row of tree's from the playing children that ran around. Gaze focused on the ground, Jaejoong shifted uncomfortably as the silence between them stilled, becoming awkward. Hand's curling into nervous fist's, as he pulled his arms closer to his chest, Jaejoong waited, 5 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute before he looked up.
"Yunho...?" he punctuated his sentence with an awkward laugh that he forced from his throat as he took a small step forward, his arms loosening from their position across his chest, almost ready to reach forward to touch the boy standing in front of him.
"Lets break up." The words broke the silence between them, its meaning sharp, piercing and hurtful. Jaejoong felt a shock run through his body as the words were uttered, it was a feeling that no words could describe, he felt numb, disconnected, like a part of him died, faltered, was lost.
With shock, always came denial.
"You're...you're joking aren't you Yunho, you're joking, it’s a joke..." he trailed off, as his gaze fell onto the younger man's face. The smile and laughter was supposed to break through now, showing Jaejoong that it was all a joke, the climax before the surprise he was supposed to reveal, and yet what greeted him was not a smile, nothing that resembled a smile. In fact, it was a cold, hard mask, a mask of pity, of dead emotions. Tears started to prickle his eyes, as Jaejoong watched the younger shake his head slowly, his gaze dropping to the floor, not meeting Jaejoong's own.
It felt as if his heart had been ripped from his chest, as if his pulse had gone, faltered, disappeared. He stood there, rigid, frozen into place as the tears started to fall, slowly at first, before gaining speed.
"Why..." was all the older man could whisper, as he let his arms fall limply to his side.
"I'm sorry. I...I'm sorry Jae...I guess we were never meant to be, all the distance did to us, it made us fight, it made you jealous, needy, clingy, it pulled us apart, I guess we were never fated to be."
Jaejoong felt his legs give way under him as he dropped to his knees, the perfect picture of sorrow against the clear blue sky as a backdrop. His body shook furiously, as the tears climaxed, giving way to hysterics. Loud sobs echoed in the air, desperate, needy and longing. His hands swiped against his own forehead, lost, broken, as they pulled away the strands of his hair that had been so perfectly coiffed into place, tugging, pushing, sweeping. Then, they reached forward, as he felt his knees shuffle across the ground towards the standing man, his eyes rimmed with red, bloodshot, as the tears flowed in a continuous motion.
"Yunho - no, no I can change, I can change, I won't be like that anymore, never again. I ...I don't leave me. Yunho....please." his words faltered into a barely audible whisper as he grasped as the younger's pant leg, his grip loose and desperate.
"I can't...you, me, I lost it, and...and... there is someone else." Yunho's gaze softened, as the edges of a small smile crept into his features "...and I think I love her."
Those were the last words Kim Jaejoong heard that day, the very same words that broke him, suffocated him, killed him.
