Summary: So, again, not what I had thought this chapter would turn into. This story seems to have a mind of its own. And if you haven’t heard this song by Stevie Nicks, check it out. One of my favorites. Feedback is love.
“Love is...
You've got the softest lips
Love is...
The touch of your fingertips
Ooh, she says love is
Knowing you wont let go
Love is...
Watching you go”
A few hours later, CJ is sitting on her couch waiting on Toby. She’s already packed what few things she can take on the road with her. Everything else will keep until she gets back to California. She heads up the stairs to her bedroom to make sure she hasn’t forgotten anything when the doorbell rings. “Come in, Toby! I’ll be down in a second.” She hears the front door open and close just as she heads into her bedroom. Making a quick scan of her room, she sees that she hasn’t forgotten to pack anything she can’t live without and turns to head back downstairs but stops as she hears footsteps on the stairs. “Okay, Toby, let’s go.” But the person who walks into her bedroom is not Toby.
“Abbey, what are you doing here?” The older woman laughs. “Well, hello to you, too, Claudia Jean.” CJ’s pulse races as she watches Abbey explore her bedroom, knowing that the other woman shouldn’t be in here. It’s too much too soon. CJ feels a familiar stirring in her belly as the older woman sits on the bed. “I know you were expecting Toby, but he had to take an earlier flight. I guess my husband went off on some of the staffers for some unknown reason and Leo needed Toby to help mediate.” CJ chuckles, trying to think of a situation in which Toby Zeigler would play mediator. She couldn’t think of one. “So, he sent you to get me on the plane?” Abbey nods, stretching out on the bed. “This is quite possibly the biggest bed I’ve ever seen. And the most comfortable.”
“Abbey, look at me. I’m 6 feet tall! I need a bed that big just so my feet don’t stick over the edge.” Abbey pats the bed beside her. “C’mon, CJ, lay with me.” CJ fights the urge to pounce on the other woman. “Abbey, we have a plane to catch. We should get going.” The other woman sticks her bottom lip out in what has to be the sexiest pout CJ has ever seen. “Our plane doesn’t leave for a few hours yet. We have some time to kill.” CJ looks into Abbey eyes, seeing her desire and silently curses Toby for not warning her. Finally giving into temptation, CJ crosses the room and joins her guest on the bed. Abbey rolls over onto her side facing CJ and rests her hand on the other woman’s toned stomach. “Abbey, this isn’t a good idea. We agreed-” Abbey places a silencing finger on the younger woman’s lips. “We agreed that when we got to the airport we’d pretend to be meeting for the first time. But we’re not in the airport.” Abbey leans over, kissing CJ lightly.
CJ knows that there’s no use in fighting her feelings. It was over for her the moment Abbey walked into her bedroom. Seeing this beautiful woman laying in her bed is too much. She reaches out, pulling Abbey closer for a deeper kiss. She tries to block out everything but the woman in front of her, but fails miserably. As she feels Abbey’s hands reach for the button of her jeans, CJ pulls away. “Wait, Abbey, I can’t do this. I can’t make love to my new boss’s wife. I can’t do it.” The older woman sits up. “Then don’t, CJ.” CJ sits there staring at her lover waiting for her to finish that sentence, because she doesn’t seem to want to get off the bed. “What?” Abbey kicks her shoes off, snuggling into the pillows. “Don’t don’t make love to your boss’s wife. I wasn’t always Abigail Bartlet, you know. There was a time when I was simply Abigail Barrington. My father called me Gail. He wanted to name me after his mother, but my mother didn’t like his mother so they compromised and named me Abigail. My mother was the only one who called me Abbey. When Jed and I met, well, he liked Abbey better so I guess I just became Abbey Bartlet. But she’s just a character, CJ, a mask I put on when Jed went into politics to shield myself from the shit storm that comes with being a public figure. So don’t make love to your boss’s wife. Make love to Gail; she’s the one in your bed.”
“Gail?” Looking into Abbey’s honey colored eyes, CJ knows she can’t refuse her. She doesn’t want to. With a sigh that comes all the way from her toes, CJ lays on the bed covering her lover’s body with her own. Their love making is slow and gentle despite the fact that they only have a few hours together before they have to pretend to be other people. An hour later the two lay dozing in a pile of blankets in the bed that CJ had meticulously made before Abbey arrived earlier. Abbey is resting her head on CJ’s chest, running her fingers across her lovers flat stomach and CJ is running her fingers through her Abbey’s dark hair. “God help me, Gail, but I think I’m falling in love with you.” The older woman looks into her lover’s eyes, smiling. “I know I’m falling in love with you, Claudia Jean.” CJ holds her partner close, praying that time will stop so they can lay in this bed forever. “And I thought it would be hard to be your friend before…” Abbey places a chaste kiss on CJ’s lips. “Just don’t give up on us, CJ. We can do this. Just a few months of campaigning, and when Jed drops out of the race we can be together.” CJ nods, kissing the top of her lover’s head. “I think I can wait a few months to spend the rest of my life with you.”
